Art of Lament
April 17–19 · Eskus / Nuuksio National Park, Espoo
Fri 5 PM - Sun 4 PM
Do you remember a time when you cried because you needed to cry?
How did your body feel afterward — clearer, lighter, more alive?
Most of us have learned to hold back our tears.
To cope. To continue. To function.
But tears that are not cried do not disappear.
They remain in the nervous system.
They tighten the breath, narrow expression, and dim direction.
It is possible to live like this.
But is it worth it?
Unmourned grief does not leave except through grieving — and through becoming conscious of everything that has been bound up in it. When this process is brought to completion, a tremendous amount of energy is released toward where you truly want to go.
During The Art of Lament weekend, two levels come together:
The lament tradition is both ancient and timeless.
It is a way of giving grief a voice and form so that it does not remain inside as a burden.
Threshold, a framework for conscious practice, brings a clear and bounded structure to the process.
It helps you make sense of your experience, understand what unfolds within you through lament, and integrate insights into your own direction and daily life.
In this way, the liberating effect of lament does not remain a temporary experience,
but becomes a new way of relating to yourself, others, and the world.
The process takes place in a group, while remaining each participant’s own journey.
Human beings are social creatures; our nervous systems regulate and discharge most effectively in connection with others — within a clearly held and safe space.
You do not need prior experience.
You do not need to be “someone who can cry.”
It is enough that you recognize you are at a point
where you want to reduce inner strain
and move through the world with greater clarity.
The group is guided by
Johanna Matruka, developer of the Threshold method,
and Tuomas Rounakari, musician and carrier of the lament tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to cry out loud?
No. Crying is neither a requirement nor a performance. The body is allowed to do what is timely.
Is this therapy?
No. This is not a therapeutic relationship.
Threshold provides a structured and responsible framework for processing and integrating experience.
What if lament feels unfamiliar?
That is common. You do not need prior knowledge. The skill develops gradually through guidance.
